(Icelandic: Ísland) is a mountainous island nation in the north Atlantic Ocean, located between Europe and North America. Though not part of the continental mainland, the country is considered European. The name of the country—Iceland—may not be that appropriate: although 10% of Iceland is covered by glaciers, it has a surprisingly mild climate and countless geothermal hot-spots and hot springs. The native spelling (“Ísland”) is appropriate in English as well. Tipping isn’t done in Iceland and driving off-road is illegal and destroys the nature.

In the old days fishermen used to test their strength by lifting heavy rocks, that still lie there. Heaviest is Fullsterkur (“full strength”), weighing 154 kg, next is Halfsterkur (“half strength”) weighing 100 kg, halfdraettingur (“weakling”) weighing 54 kg and Amlooi (“Useless”) 23 kg. They were traditionally used to qualify men for work on fishing boats, with the Halfdraettingur being the minimum weight a man would have to lift onto a ledge at hip-height to qualify.
